Field: network number

Length: 4 bytes

Contents: address of the destination network.

The value of this field is the assigned network address; it is only used in assignment response" packets.

The network number" is needed for routing reasons.

Standard IP (TCP/IP) uses 32 bit addresses which contain both network and host address (net ID, host ID). VINES IP addresses have a 32 bit network number" which identifies only the network (not the host).
