Contents: address of the destination subnetwork.

The value of this field is the assigned subnetwork address; it is only used in assignment response" packets.

The subnet number identifies the VINES host (similar to 'host ID' part within DoD IP addresses).

Standard IP (TCP/IP) uses 32 bit addresses which contain both network and host address (net ID, host ID). VINES IP addresses have a 32 bit network number" which identifies only the network (not the host).

The subnet number is automatically assigned by VINES.
